Approximately 120 letters addressed to members of his immediate family, recounting his experiences in his overland journey to California, as a bookkeeper, tax collector, Deputy Assessor, Deputy Sheriff, and finally Superintendent of Schools of Placer County, California. Chase remarks on current affairs ranging from slavery, the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln, gold mining in California, and the first transcontinental railroad.

Born in Wisconsin, July 26, 1839 to Thomas and Elvira Crosby. Charles had an elder brother, George Crosby, and a younger sister, Cornelia. Charles was raised on a farm in Beloit, Wisconsin.
